Everyone Struggles, You’re Not Alone, Just Keep on Going

Sometimes you just need it to hear from someone to feel inspired

I have been writing daily for years.

I love to write. Yet, every once in a while the struggle to write never left me.

There are days when I feel inspired, and words come out spontaneously.  

There are days when I find myself staring at a blank page and I couldn’t come up with anything.

And there would be days I don’t even want to open my PC.

When I look at writers online; those who write and publish each day without fail, I stand in wonder, “how the hell do they do it.”  

I convinced myself that great writers don’t struggle. Which led me to believe that no matter how hard I pursue my craft, I would never reach their level of spontaneity.

I don’t make my living writing. But I thought it would be fun if I could develop the habit and discipline to write like the professionals do.

So, I have kept asking myself, “do successful writers don’t struggle at all?”

One day I finally found my answer.

I bought a course on writing from a well-known writer online.

He’s making a living from his blog and publishes each day. Aside from his blog posts, he guest posts and, sends newsletter to his subscribers weekly.

In one of the videos that I watched, the author mentioned in passing that writing is at times a struggle.  

It caught my attention. That statement finally awakened me.

I’m not different, I thought. Here is a man who has been writing and publishing each day for the last number of years.  

Yet, even with his solid writing experience, he admits that he struggles.

I finally realized everyone struggles.  

James Clear in his book “Atomic Habits” (which I highly recommend) mentioned that even a habit that has been functioning for years may one day collapse.

But what you do after that one day is what matters most. Miss another day and the original habit is now being replaced by a new one.

This applies to all activities and routines in your life not only writing.

I face the same challenge when I get up each morning to jog. There are days I would find myself dragging my feet.

If a day comes and a part of you holds you back, muster the strength to keep going.

It’s what you do at the moment of struggle that will differentiate you from the novice and amateurs. The amateurs might skip but the pros will not unless it’s out if their control.

The next time struggle for the next blog post, sit and force yourself to write.

If you wake up and feel sleepy to hit the road, drag your feet and get out.

Do everything at your disposal to keep going. Don’t allow laziness to hold you back.

In case you miss a day, don’t allow yourself to miss twice. Once you’ve done it, it would be easier to fight the next struggle.  

Then people will see your consistency and accomplishments and wonder, “how the hell does he or she do it?”

If It Doesn’t Resonate, Keep Learning It, Stick to It Until It Makes Sense

I never fully understood the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill when I first read it.

For me the writing was boring. It was dull and the stories in the book never sparked any inspiration whatsoever.

But nevertheless, I finished the book and passed it along to my brother who would become wealthy in the next few years.

Even though I never fully understood it, I practiced what it taught. It worked in some areas in my life, but it was a hit and miss. And I could probably attribute the good things that happened to luck.

As years passed, I picked up the book once again in one of my lowest points in life. For whatever reason I read it again.

I was waiting for something inspiring or magical to happen but nothing transpired. I couldn’t believe about the wonderful stories this book has generated over the years.

Then one day something happened…  

I got hold of the book by Monica Main, The Lost Secret: Unlocking the Hidden Chapters of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. After reading the first few chapters, Napoleon’s book became crystal clear, I finally understood it.

When you don’t understand something, yet it keeps on calling you, it’s time to face it and learn what it is. The thought of what the book promises has never left me since I first got hold of it.

Yet even with my fullest efforts, I could not digest what it was really trying to say to me. But I never let go. I know from my gut feeling that this book will help me reach my full potential and it did.

Haven’t I stuck with it, I could have never discovered the teachings behind it. I wouldn’t be reaping the great rewards that I am now experiencing. Since then, I applied this strategy in other areas of my life.

It may not be a book, it can be a philosophy or a lesson. It can be teaching or it can be an inspiration. If you don’t fully understand it, look at it from a different perspective. 

A single topic can be presented and taught in many ways. So, start looking for other authors or books that teach the same subject but in a different way. Then choose the one that completely resonate and blend with your understanding.   

If the voice of one author could not resonate with you, find another, then another. Keep on searching, keep on learning, and keep on doing until finally what you are trying to uncover will begin to make sense.

Then use it to shift your life in the direction you want to become. 

Increase Your Productivity by Applying the Philosophy Behind “Falling in Line”

In life, we all fall in line.

When we go to the grocery store, when we pay our bills, when we fill our gas tank, when we go to the bank, when we go to the cafeteria, and even when we go to the rest rooms.

If there is a crowd and the place couldn’t accommodate everyone at the same time, falling in line is the only option to address this.

Falling in line assures everyone gets equal treatment. No matter what our status in life is, we fall in line. First come, first served, everybody waits for their turn.

Exceptions do happen eventually. We give exceptions to senior citizens and to people who are disabled. And in certain occasions we give exceptions to certain noteworthy people. They don’t fall in line but instead we allow them to be ahead of the line.

There is a philosophy behind this co called “falling in line.” Subtle it may seem but there is a great lesson to be learned from this philosophy. The philosophy of treating every task that comes in our way equally.  

Everyday we encounter various tasks. These tasks can come from work, business, school, community and home.

We are overwhelmed with our everyday tasks. And here, we can apply the lesson of “falling in line.” If we complete our tasks chronologically from what was given first to what was given last, just like falling in line, we will double our productivity.

In order to improve productivity, we must not choose what goes first or what goes last. We must not choose what is fun, what is tedious and what is mundane. As soon as a new task is delegated to us, no matter how interesting and fun it is, we place it at the back of the line and let it sit there and wait for its turn.

We complete first what’s on top and move down to the next. One by one, we finish each task without deciding or choosing who comes next. Whether the task is fun, boring, tedious, mundane, dull, or lifeless, when it’s time for it to get its turn, we work on them first.

But just like in life, there will also be exceptions. A sudden request for report that is needed in the next hour, an assignment that must be finished asap or an emergency that needs to be addressed immediately, like a leak in your sink in the middle of the night. These tasks must be completed first.

Some people I know only work on the things that they find it fun and easy to do. They procrastinate on doing the things they find it boring, even if those tasks have priority over the ones that they choose to do. And things would get even worse if they totally forgot about it.

And when the deadline comes, they rush, and try to beat the deadline. In return, they make mistakes and at times make costly error. And because of this, the job is poorly done.

So, no matter how mundane and boring a task is, when it’s time for it to get served, serve it. Develop a habit for it.

Following this philosophy will assure you that there will be no forgotten tasks and eventually you will have a consistent increase in output and productivity.

Here is my story.

I always thought that my previous weight of 180 – 190 lbs. range was normal for my height of 5’7”.

Although knowing that this was normal, I still tried losing weight for a couple of years but failed.

The degree of my comfort zone was higher than the degree of my desire to lose weight.

This was about to change. In the middle of February 2020, my co-worker told me about the “Body Mass Index” (BMI). It is some sort of calculator wherein you will input your current weight and height. Then it will tell you if your weight is normal or not.

There I found out I was overweight. I was overweight by 25 lbs. I can’t believe it. All throughout those years I convinced myself that my weight was normal.

Unfortunately, it was the opposite. Probably this was the reason my blood sugar count was erratic and my blood sugar was always borderline.

I had to do something. I have to lose weight. My desire was so great I immediately took the first action. By doing this, I told myself, not only will I be improving my health, I’ll also be build self-confidence and self-esteem.

So, my journey to lose weight began. The foremost question I had was “how to lose weight fast?” I started searching for answers online, and my research took me to a certain type of diet — “the Keto diet.”

Below was my BMI, height — 5’7″ / Weight — 185 lbs. My BMI measured 29 which was considered overweight. My weight should go down to 155 lbs. to be normal. I was overweight by 25+ lbs.

What is a Keto Diet?

Keto diet is a high fat, moderate protein and low-carb diet. It actually restricts the consumption of carbohydrates forcing the body to burn fats.

This is the reason why it makes you lose weight fast. Undoubtedly, if your body starts using fats as its primary source of energy, losing weight becomes easy.

But before the weight loss regime, primarily, the Keto diet was first and foremost used to treat certain medical conditions. In the 19th century it was used to help combat type 2 diabetes. And in the 1920s it was used to treat epilepsy in children. (resource)


My Decision to Lose Weight

So, beginning March 2020, I followed the Keto diet.

The first week was difficult. During that period, I discovered that I was addicted to sugar. My cravings were terrible. I remember waking up early in the morning at 1AM very hungry. I almost ate rice but I controlled myself and munched on some cucumbers.

Another time my craving was so strong, I almost gave in. Fortunately I found some okra in the refrigerator, boiled them and finished it all (12pcs to be exact).

On the second week, the cravings become manageable. Cucumbers worked for me in fighting off cravings. So, I always see to it that there are always cucumbers in the fridge.

I Started to Lose Weight

On the first week of March, I lost 3 lbs. It’s not something to brag about but I was getting somewhere. By the end of March, I lost another 7 lbs, total 10 lbs.

I got fed up eating too much fats (Keto requires 70% of the diet) that I minimized my consumption. Instead, beginning the month of May, I changed my diet to a low-carb diet. So, for the month of May I followed strictly the low-carb diet.

I ate poultry, pork, beef and fish. I ate veggies and fruits low in carbs. That became my diet. The only source of fat comes only from whatever is laid in front of me. But I make sure there is always protein in my meal.

I eat when I am hungry. When I feel like eating, I just munch on cucumbers for snack. I’m not picky with the food I eat. I am not a fan of organic blah blah blah. In my opinion these are just marketing hype. But it’s your choice if you believe otherwise.

Little by little, my diet became part of my lifestyle. Soon my subconscious mind has adapted to protect me from eating carbs and sugar. Soon, before I buy or consume anything, I always check their nutrition facts. If it’s within my daily budget (50–80 grams of carbs per day), I eat it. If not, I discard it.

The cravings have not totally left me. I was a pasta lover, and that is one thing I am going to miss, and I will miss. But the rest, I can live without.

With this being said I bid farewell to veggies and fruits high in sugar. I said goodbye to rice, bread, cakes, ice cream, pastries, chips and all the foods that are high in sugar.

Instead, pork, beef, chicken, fish, seafoods and veggies and fruits which are low in sugar stayed in my diet. I also welcomed bacon, hot dogs, spam, ham and other processed foods that others consider unhealthy. I don’t eat them often though, but I will eat them if I got the chance to.

My diet consists primarily of protein and fiber. The fat will just come from the meat, veggies and fruits that I eat. If there’s none, then there’s none. Although I supplement my fat intake with almond milk, mayonnaise and heavy cream.

And guess what, by end of May I lost another 15 lbs. Unbelievable you might say but this got me worried a bit.

I Lost 30 Pounds in 4 Months

I continued my low carb diet. By the end of June, I lost another 5 lbs. Suddenly I panicked. What if I keep on losing weight? This is bad I told myself. I was really worried.

Why? Because I keep on losing weight.

Then I realized that I lost so much weight because my body is burning all the fats in my body. And since I am not consuming the required 70% fat. My body has no choice but to use protein as a source of energy as well.

Still, gotten used to with my new lifestyle, I continued what I was doing – low carb diet. After two weeks, finally my weight plateaued. I lost a total of 30 lbs. in 4 months and my body has found its place.

I am happy with it, and I am going to live with it.

I strive to be as normal as I can, so I started using sugar alternatives. I tried Erythritol, Stevia and Splenda. They are all good but the taste that is closest to sugar is Erythritol. I also started using almond flour to bake pastries every once in a while.

It’s now September 2020 (at the time of this writing) 7 months since I started my low carb diet. I feel great and energetic. I am a runner. But I stopped in February because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In August, I started running again. Surprisingly, my speed in running increased. I couldn’t imagine I was running 30 lbs. heavier before than my current weight.

Don’t Be Affected by What Others Will Say

I keep on getting negative comments from other people that artificial sweeteners are bad. Normal fats and saturated fats are bad. I never argue with them, it’s their belief and any argument will go nowhere.

I don’t want to call them naive but honestly, when it comes to sweeteners, they have been consuming it since the day they started brushing their teeth.

Toothpaste contains artificial sweeteners unknown to most people. Where would it get its sweetness if its sugar free? You may argue that certain toothpaste have no sweeteners, but I tell you most major brands contain them.

So, if you have been using the branded ones, then you have been eating these sweeteners. But don’t worry it’s totally safe. The damages brought by real sugar will wreck more havoc than these sweeteners.

You see. The belief that sugar is safe for our health is totally ingrained to most people’s belief. It’s in our subconscious mind. If that belief is challenged, it would defend itself. But try changing it and the newly formed belief will change your lifestyle.

Let me explain.

Buddhist don’t eat meat, Muslims don’t eat pork, atheists don’t believe in god, etc. These are just few samples of what we call beliefs, and it is very difficult to change them.

I was made to believe that saturated fats are bad. That was my challenge when I followed the keto diet. But with a leap of faith, I went all in keto diet.

And surprise, surprise, I lost weight consuming mostly fats during my early days in losing weight. My sugar count went down and my hypertension improved. I couldn’t believe it, but a new belief in my mind was formed.

Slowly this belief propagated in my subconscious mind. And currently, it would definitely protect itself when it is challenged.

So screw what other people will tell you. Most of them, trust me, are unhealthy people. people who are suffering from diabetes and hypertension and other sorts of obese related diseases. My take is if it’s doing you good, continue, if not then change it.

I don’t say that sugar nor carbs are bad. I’m not saying that carbs and fats don’t complement each other. What I am saying is everything should be eaten in moderation, and everything should be balanced. If not, then the effects are detrimental to one’s health.

I’m not that guy who can follow a balanced diet. Nope, I’m not. The last time I ate rice, I ate 4 cups of fried rice. I just can’t control myself. Knowing that sugar is highly addictive, I just can’t eat a well-balanced diet.

It’s either I completely give up eating carbs and be healthy, or I eat carbs uncontrollably and be unhealthy and live a sluggish and unhealthy lifestyle.

Now it’s your turn

Losing weight fast even without exercise is very possible. I am a living witness to that. It just takes effort in changing your belief. But once you have eliminated the myths that your subconscious mind was made to believe, everything will be easy.

This is not just my story. I do hope it will serve as an inspiration and it eliminates the myths that you were made to believe.

If you are overweight (measure your Body Mass Index), you have to do something. I am in my forties and before I changed my diet, I wasn’t feeling very well. I felt bad stuff which I always attribute to old age. Joint aches, knee pains, muscle pains, etc.

But now, after changing my lifestyle, after losing weight, I feel younger, better and healthier.

Do it!

Lastly, this story is not an advice. You have to make up your own mind with what you want to do with your life. If you have reached this point, then I know you are motivated to do some changes in your life. So take action and do it.

If you’re overweight or if you are not happy with your weight you have a choice. You have to make a decision. If you can’t follow a well-balanced diet, you should do and change something.

Health should be the foremost investment you give yourself. Money should only be secondary. What is a million dollars’ worth if you’re stuck in a wheel chair carrying an oxygen tank and suffering from diabetes and hypertension.

Whatever that choice is, do it now, decide now and move on; unstuck your life.

Time is too precious to be wasted.

I started at the bottom when I entered the corporate world. Fresh out of college, my first job was a warehouse clerk.

It was a habit of mine to finish pending tasks that I could accomplish within the day. I will finish them before I leave, even if it means extending work without pay because some companies don’t allow overtime.

In short, unknowingly, I was working more than what I was paid for. I nurtured this habit and kept doing it as the years passed. Some of my coworkers would comment negatively on what I was doing.

“You’re out of your mind, working without pay,” they would tell me.

I just dismissed them and continued. I am now Manager as I write this article, and most of my coworkers who gave those negative comments are still where they were when I left them.

You’re Always in Demand

When you do more than what you are expected, you choose to perform better. And ultimately improve the quality of your work regardless of how much you are earning.

These are the qualities employers are looking for. These people will get the promotion and salary raise faster than anyone else.

However, people who choose financial rewards over the quality of their work will not succeed in life. I’ve observed this, and I have seen it happen over and over again.

They measure their work with the compensation that they receive. They grumble and complain all the time. Hence their quality of work is degraded, and they get stuck to where they are.

So, if you want to become a sought after employee, then work and deliver more than what is expected.

You Learn New Skills

When you improve the quality of your work, you need to learn new skills to increase your productivity.

By learning new skills, you will be able to accomplish more in less time than expected. You will be able to focus on other things and learn new things. You can soon start accepting additional responsibilities.

Your superiors will notice this, and you will always be on their top list when the next salary raise is given. Not only that, if you get good at your job, words will spread to other companies, which may land you higher and bigger opportunities.

You Become a Creative Genius

My mentor, whom I’ve worked with several years ago, told me the secret of his success. He was, by the way, the youngest Controller the company ever had.

He went on telling me, “Always be creative.” When you are asked to do something, give more than what they asked you for.”

“If someone is asking you for a burger, be creative and serve it with fries and sundae to make the meal more attractive,” he said. “Doing this will guarantee your success in life.”

I got his point and practiced his advice to this day. In short, when we do more than what we are expected to do, we become creative to improve the quality of our work.

So instead of submitting a single page year-to-date income report to your superiors, add graphs, monthly trends, highlights, explanations, and analysis.

There Will Be Better Opportunities

When I got the position as Manager, my salary increased by two-fold. Surprisingly, I didn’t even apply for the job. It was offered to me.

This was a miracle for me way back then. On that same day before the managerial job offer came, I resigned from my current employer.

Some misunderstanding issues with the top management forced me to quit. I’ll be jobless soon, I thought, and I don’t have the faint idea where will I go. I know God will provide, so I just sent my resignation and quit.

I felt better, although I was worried and concerned because I was jobless on my effectivity date. Then surprisingly, the job offer came.

When I got aboard on my new job, my superior told me he was looking for the right candidate and did his homework well. Among the people whom he shortlisted, I was the one whom he chose because two of my previous bosses told him positive things about the way I work.

Take Action and Start Applying This To Your Life

Do you have a day time job? Try to focus more on your work and try to accomplish as much as you can. Submit reports earlier than their usual due dates. Avoid beating deadlines. Make this a habit, and I assure you, you will be greatly compensated.

The compensation may not be immediate. It may not happen on your current employer, but trust me, your rewards are being deposited someplace safe, and soon, you will receive them in the near future.

On the other hand, do you have a business? Provide more service than you usually do. Make your customers satisfied and happy. Successful business owners know this, and they assure their customers 101% satisfaction.

Are you constantly worried about how food affects your weight? Spend some time thinking about that and notice the emotional energy you are putting out. Your desire to lose weight and your actions must be in alignment. In other words, you can’t lose weight if you’re obsessing about it daily. I’m not saying don’t track your weight. Rather, ask yourself this: how do you feel each time you step on the scale?

Practice gratitude daily.

Law of Attraction teachers preach this all the time because it works: when you feel grateful, there is no space for fear. Fear and worry about your weight will only bring more of the same feelings.

It’s the same thing with entrepreneurs. The ones who deliver more quality gets more attention and loyalty from their customers.

Nothing beats Amazon.com in customer service. This online store has always offered cheaper quality products. And their “satisfaction guaranteed” is number 1.

When you start to develop the habit of going the extra mile, everything around you will start to change. People will notice the quality of work you are delivering. This will keep you on people’s top list if they need anything from you.

Especially in your job. Cultivate the habit of delivering more than what is expected. The results may not come in day one. But as you continue doing this, the quality of the way you work will spread.

If you are always delivering your reports on time. Doing more than what is necessary. Management will see that. And like I mentioned, you will be on the top list when promotions and raises come.

But what if there are no opportunities for climbing the ladder in your company. Well there are other opportunities out there. If you see that no one is leaving, and no new positions are created, start looking for another employer.

With your experience you deserve a promotion and a raise. Look for another job and if they do a background check, I’m pretty sure they will be encouraged to hire you.
